Tells

Meaning and Definition of Tells in Gambling

The term tells refers to observable behavioral indicators or idiosyncratic physical manifestations exhibited by players or dealers within a land-based gaming environment. These indicators, ranging from micro-expressions and vocal inflections to specific postural adjustments, constitute non-verbal data that may be leveraged by opposing participants to gain a strategic advantage. In high-stakes poker, such patterns are often scrutinized to deduce the relative strength of a participant’s hand. To mitigate the risk of involuntary information disclosure and ensure compliance with personal optimal strategy, professional participants frequently employ concealment accessories, such as ocular shading or headwear, and maintain a standardized demeanor to minimize the transmission of actionable behavioral data to others at the table.
